How to Properly Wire a Momentary Push Button Switch?

Wiring a momentary push button switch is straightforward provided you know the drill. But if you don’t, this article will be edifying you on the same.

 

Understanding the Push Button Switch

First familiarize yourself with the key features and technical specs of the push button switch you plan to use by reading the product's manual or datasheet. Here are the technical specs:

  • Tactile Feedback: a distinct click when pressed.
  • Dielectric Strength: For an estimated period, the switch ought to withstand specific voltages around 250V AC, without failure.
  • Molded Terminal: the terminal designed to prevent flux rise in the circuit.
  • Operating Temperature: recommended operating temperature may fall between -20°C to +70°C.

Understanding these specs means getting your switch tailored to specific application. 

 

How a Push Button Switch Works

Despite the simplicity, a push button switch operates on either open or close an electrical circuit. The rationale here is through an internal spring and contact mechanism. Once you press the button, you compress the spring, close the circuit and allow electricity to flow.

So, the spring guarantees that the circuit is closes until pressure is applied. Upon release of the button the circuit opens.  In essence these switches are ideal for applications requiring precise control.

 

Wiring a Momentary Push Button Switch

There are standards in wiring a momentary push button switch typically involve dealing with a switch that has five pins, which are usually labeled as follows:

  1. NO (Normally Open): This pin represents the open state of the switch, meaning it's not conducting when the button is not pressed.
  2. NC (Normally Closed): This pin is in the closed state when the button is not pressed, conducting electricity.
  3. 2 LED Pins: These pins are for connecting LED indicator lights (if present).
  4. C (Common/Public): This is the common terminal used to connect the switch to your circuit.

 

Now, follow the steps below to wire the push button switch:

1.   Identify the Pins

There is a specific color-coding of the wires, generally the black and red wires associated with the LED, whereas the yellow corresponds to NC. The green takes on C, and blue to NO. though manufacturers may vary them, so you may have to consult them beforehand.

 

2.   Connect C to the Positive Power Source

Attach the wire from the C (Common) terminal to the positive output terminal of your power source to make a common connection for your switch.

 

3.   Connect NO to Your Circuit

Then the blue wire goes from the NO (Normally Open) terminal, to the circuit that is to be controlled with the switch. It’s a connection that guarantees circuit completion upon pressure exertion on the button. 

 

4.   Link up the LED Wires

Your switch may be having those LED indicator lights. Perfect! Just connect the black wire to the negative terminal and the red wire to the positive terminal of your power source.  It the final step that activates the LED indicators, providing visual feedback when the switch is pressed.

Once you do these connections correctly, by just pressing the button, the circuit should complete. And the lights or the controlled device turns on.

 

Precautions When Wiring a Push Button Switch

Considering the fact that wiring electrical components carries inherent risks, as you know it, caution is of essence through the whole process. Some of the precautions that should never miss in your checklist include:

  • Turn off the Main Power: Before starting to wire any electrical component, ensure you switch off the main power source so as not to expose yourself to the risk of electrocution. Safety first.
  • Prevent Accidental Switching: Momentary push button switches work by application of pressure and may be accidentally switched on or off. To avoid costly accidents due to this behavior, consider using a cover for such switches or positioning them out of harm's way.
  • Consult Professionals in Doubt: If you are not sure or find difficulties with the wiring, consult a professional electrician or technician. Such electrical work requires accuracy and adherence to safety standards. Thus, consulting an expert will be an excellent move.

Ensure Safety first when working around electricals. Switch off the main power supply before commencing any of the works in order to prevent accidents which may occur from such installations. Also, put off accidental activations by use of switch covers and strategic positioning of some switches.

Taking these guidelines and cautions into account, you can simply wire a momentary push button switch for your specific application purpose so that it makes your electrical circuits run without disturbance or any kind of risk.
