How to wire a momentary push button switch?

One of the easiest ways to connect your circuit is using push buttons. They have been in the market long enough and are useful when you want to wire them yourself. If you plan to set up your switch on your own, you must keep a few things in mind. You need to know everything about wiring a momentary push button switch. 


Features and Technical specifications of a switch button 

One of the things you need to ensure you do before buying a momentary switch button is to know its specifications. Here are the main specifications of the switch. 

  • It has tactile feedback to help ensure a crisp click
  • It is dielectric and withstands up to 250v AC for a minute
  • It has a molded terminal to prevent a flux rise in the circuit

  • The range of operating temperatures is -20°to +70°C, which is similar to the storage temperature. 

Now that you know all there is to the features,  it helps to know how a push button works. It will go a long way to help with placing and wiring the switch. 


How does a push button work?

While this might seem complex, it is easier than it looks. Simply put, the switch opens or closes up a circuit to ensure the process is complete. The switch comes with an internal spring and contact. The spring retracts and closes the circuit when the switch is pushed down.

Once the pressure is removed, the spring returns, and the circuit opens up. For a momentary switch, the spring keeps retracting when one stops applying pressure.

How to wire a momentary push button switch

Every push button switch comes with a 19mm metal push button, five pins, and self-locking functions. The five pins are normally open pin(NO), normally closed pin(NC), two LED pins, and a C public pin. 

Most configurations have black and red LED wires, a yellow  NC wire, a green C public, and a blue NO wire. If you are unsure which color represents which wire, you can always check the manual. Most switches come with a manual that makes it easier for you to differentiate the different wires.

Connect the C public wire to the positive terminal on the power source when wiring your switch. Once that is connected, make a mutual connection between the red wire and the positive terminal of the appliance or circuit to which you want the switch to give control. Connect these both to the NO wire.

Take the negative terminal on your appliance or circuit and the LED wire, and connect those to the positive pole on the power source. 

Once all this is done, your circuit will be complete. Your light or appliance should go on when you press the button and go off when you let go of the button. If this does not happen, then repeat the steps above.


Precautions to take when wiring your push button switch

One of the things you need to keep in mind when it comes to pushing buttons is to be careful. When care is not taken, not only is it possible for you to split the switch, but you can also get injured.

Here are some precautions to take when it comes to push-button switches. Here are some preventive measures you have to take when it comes to eating momentary push button:

  • Switch off the main power during wiring. It will help prevent electrocution.
  • Find a way to prevent accidental switching on and off of the switch. Since the circuit will be complete when pressure is applied, you are bound to make costly mistakes. Indenting your switch or keeping it out of harm’s way will help you prevent this from occurring. You can also get a cover for the switch. 
  • Where in doubt, leave the wiring to the professionals.
Wiring your momentary push button switch should not be an issue for you. All you need to remember to do is follow the instructions. Most switches come with a manual on their packaging, but where in doubt, the tips above help. With little thought put into it, you are able to wire and use your momentary switch without an issue.
