How to Install a Push Button Switch on Your Car?

by Huyu 15 Feb 2023 0 Comments

What is a push button switch?

A push button is an electrical switch activated by pressing a button. It can be a type of momentary switch, which means it only remains in the "on" position while the button is being pressed and returns to the "off" position when the button is released. Push button switches can be used to control a wide variety of electrical devices, including lights, motors, and other electrical circuits.

They are commonly used in various applications, including automobiles, home appliances, and industrial equipment. Some push-button switches have a built-in LED light to indicate when the button is active. They can also have different levels of protection against environmental factors in different scenarios.

What are the typical applications of push-button switches on cars?

Push button switches are commonly used in cars for a variety of functions, such as:

  • Starting the engine: Many modern cars use a push button switch to start the machine instead of a traditional keyed ignition.
  • Controlling lights: Push-button switches can be used to turn on and off the headlights, taillights, and other lights in the car.
  • Operating windows: Push-button switches can control the power windows, allowing the driver and passengers to raise and lower the windows.
  • Controlling the radio and other electronic devices: Push-button switches can turn the radio and other electronic devices on and off and adjust the volume.
  • Activating the horn: Many cars have a push button switch on the steering wheel that can be used to honk the horn.

It's crucial to understand this is a partial list, and the specific functions controlled by push button switches may vary depending on the make and model of the car. Now that we understand the importance of push-button switches, it's time to learn how to install them in a vehicle.

How to Install a Push Button Switch on Your Car?

Installing a push button switch in your car involves the following steps:

Step 1:Locate a suitable location for the switch

The location should be easily accessible and visible to the driver or passengers, i.e., the dashboard or near the steering wheel. Visibility allows the driver to tell if the switch is on/off at a glance.

Additionally, the location should not interfere with the vehicle's safe operation, such as blocking the view of the road or impeding the driver's ability to reach the pedals.

Finally, the location of the switch should be chosen based on the function of the button; for example, if it is related to the lights, it should be closer to the lighting controls.

Step 2:Determine the proper wire connections for the switch.

Consult the wiring diagram for your car or the instructions that came with the switch. These diagrams will show the locations of the various electrical components in the vehicle and indicate which wires need to be connected to the controller.

The charts will also help identify the power source for the switch. This is typically the battery or a fuse in the car's electrical system. The power source will provide the voltage needed to operate the control and its controlling component.

Step: 3: Disconnect the battery

Yes, it is essential to disconnect the battery before installing a push button switch in your car to prevent electrical shock. This is because the battery provides voltage to the car's electrical system, and even a tiny amount of voltage can be dangerous.

Disrupting the battery will break the circuit and prevent any electrical current from flowing through the wires. This will ensure the safety of the person working on the switch installation.

Step 4: Run the wires

Run the wires for the switch to the location where the button will be installed. Ensure the cables are long enough to reach the switch without stretching or pulling.

Step 5: Connecting the wires to the push button switch

Connect the wires to the switch, following the wiring diagram or instructions. Make sure the connections are secure and adequately insulated. Strip the insulation from the ends of the wires that will be connected to the switch. Make sure to expose enough wire to make a secure connection.

Most push button switches have three terminals: Common, Normally Open and Normally Closed. Connect the power source wire to the "COM" terminal on the switch. This terminal will provide the voltage needed to operate the button and its controlling component.

Connect the ground wire to the "NC" terminal on the switch. This terminal completes the circuit and allows the button to operate. Connect the load wire to the "NO" terminal on the switch. This terminal is connected to the component that the switch will control, such as a light or motor.

Double-check the connections and the wiring diagram before testing the button to avoid damage to the car's electrical system or even a fire hazard. Finally, reattach the battery and try the switch again and if everything is okay, secure the switch with screws or adhesive.

Conclusion

This is a general guide, and the steps may vary based on the specific switch and car model. It's always recommended to consult the car manual or a professional mechanic. Hopefully, this article will be helpful for all those DIY people who don't mind getting their hands dirty.
